Harjot Singh Bains

Harjot Singh Bains is an Indian politician and advocate associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He serves as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Punjab and is known both for his political initiatives and social activism.


 Early Life & Background

Date of Birth: 15 November 1990 (approx.)

Place of Birth: Village Gambhirpur, near Sri Anandpur Sahib, Rupnagar district   Punjab, India.

           Family:

                      Father: Sohan Singh Bains – owns a transport business.

                      Mother: Palwinder Kaur – homemaker.

                             Sibling: One younger sister, Anmol Kaur.

                      Religion: Sikhism.


 Education

                 BA LLB (Hons)Panjab University, Chandigarh (2014).

 Certificate in International Human Rights LawLondon School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) (2018).

  Worked as a practicing lawyer in the Punjab & Haryana High Court before full-time  politics.


Political Career

Early Political Activism

Harjot Singh Bains started his public life through social movements, including:

            Anti-corruption campaigns (India Against Corruption).

            Founding his own youth organization (“Pan Punjab United Youth Organization”).   

            Leadership in youth mobilization and public welfare initiatives.

      Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Roles

Early leader and key figure in establishing AAP’s presence in Punjab.

            Served as State Youth Wing President of AAP Punjab.

Has held posts like AAP Punjab spokesperson and roles on the party’s national execu vtive.


      Electoral Politics

2017 Punjab Assembly Election: Contested from the Sahnewal constituency (unsuc cessful).

             2022 Punjab Assembly Election:

                      Won the Sri Anandpur Sahib seat in Rupnagar district by a significant margin.

                       Defeated senior Congress leader and then-Speaker Rana KP Singh.


Ministerial Positions

After the 2022 election victory, Bains was inducted into the Punjab Cabinet and became one of the youngest Cabinet Ministers in the state’s history.

He has held key portfolios including:

            Mines & Geology

            Tourism & Cultural Affairs

Education (School & Higher)
His work has included initiatives on education reforms, prison modernization, and tourism promotion.


Notable Initiatives & Public Work

           Disaster Relief & Community Service

 Launched Operation Rahat to help repair homes in flood-affected villages in his constituency and provided personal funds for relief.

            Cultural & Heritage Projects

Announced a ₹25-crore heritage project in Anandpur Sahib to enhance pilgrim expe- rience and tourism.

   Religious Involvement & Public Response

Undertook religious penance (‘tankhah’) after controversy over an event where inappropriate music was played at a government program commemorating a Sikh Guru, including service duties and infrastructural efforts directed by Sikh clergy.

Participated in significant Sikh commemorative events like the Dashmesh March at  Anandpur Sahib.
