Oppo
Oppo was founded in 2001 by Tony Chen in Dongguan, China, and officially entered the market in 2004. The company launched its first product, the Oppo X3 MP3 player, internationally in 2005. Over time, Oppo expanded its presence to more than 50 countries, establishing itself as a major global brand in consumer electronics.
By 2016, Oppo had become China’s largest smartphone manufacturer, with its devices sold through over 200,000 retail outlets nationwide. The brand continued its rise, securing the top position in the Chinese smartphone market in 2019 and ranking among the world’s top five smartphone makers. Although once believed to be part of BBK Electronics, Oppo has since clarified that it operates independently.

In terms of branding, Oppo used its original logo design until March 2019 and later introduced Ollie as its official mascot. The company has a long history of creative collaborations and sponsorships to strengthen its global presence.
In 2010, the South Korean boy band 2PM produced a promotional song for Oppo’s product launch in Thailand. Five years later, in 2015, Oppo signed a sponsorship deal with FC Barcelona, marking its entry into the world of major sports partnerships. The following year, it became an official partner of the Philippine Basketball Association.
Oppo has also worked with popular celebrities to enhance its market reach — notably Sơn Tùng M-TP in Vietnam — and supported major reality TV shows such as The Face Vietnam. From 2017 to 2019, Oppo was the official sponsor of the Indian national cricket team, further solidifying its brand visibility across South Asia.
In 2019, Oppo extended its global sports sponsorships by becoming the official smartphone partner for the French Open and Wimbledon Championships, a collaboration that lasted for five years. The same year, the company entered the esports arena as the exclusive global smartphone partner of Riot Games, supporting the League of Legends Esports tournaments.
Continuing its association with global icons, Oppo appointed SEVENTEEN’s subunit BSS as its Asia-Pacific brand ambassadors in March 2024 to promote the Oppo Reno 11F.
Oppo’s product lineup includes high-end smartphones such as the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, as well as other premium devices. The company also diversified into audio and wearable technology, launching the HA-2 portable headphone amplifier in 2015 and the HA-2SE in 2016. It entered the smartwatch segment with the Oppo Watch in 2020, followed by successive models — the Watch 2 (2021), Watch 3 Pro (2022), and Watch 4 Pro (2024).
Research and Development
Oppo has been at the forefront of innovation, particularly in fast-charging technology. In 2014, the company introduced VOOC (Voltage Open Loop Multi-step Constant-Current Charging) — a groundbreaking advancement that set new standards for smartphone charging efficiency. Over time, Oppo has continued refining the technology through several upgraded versions:
VOOC 2.0 (2015): Retained the original 5V/4A output, ensuring stable and efficient charging.
SuperVOOC (2016): Marked a major leap with 10V/5A (50W) charging capability, using low-voltage pulse technology for enhanced safety and speed.
VOOC 3.0 (2019): Delivered 5V/6A power, marketed as Warp Charge 30, offering up to 23.8% faster charging than its predecessor.
VOOC 4.0 (2019): Improved efficiency further, delivering 5V/6A (30W) and capable of reaching 67% battery in just 30 minutes.
SuperVOOC 2.0 (2020): Upgraded to 10V/6.5A, also marketed under names such as Warp Charge 65.
SuperVOOC 2.0 (2022): Offered 11V/6–7.3A performance, branded in some devices as Warp Charge 80, SuperDART, or Super Flash Charge.
240W SuperVOOC (2022): Unveiled at the Mobile World Congress, this revolutionary 20V/12A system can fully charge a 4,500mAh battery in just nine minutes. It’s featured in the Realme GT Neo5 and requires a dedicated charger and USB-C cable to achieve full power delivery.
In November 2023, Oppo expanded its innovation efforts beyond charging with a major collaboration with Hasselblad. Together, they unveiled the HyperTone camera system at Paris Photo 2023, set to debut in Oppo’s upcoming Find series flagship smartphones. The partnership aims to elevate mobile photography through advanced computational imaging and aesthetic-driven camera design.
Oppo has also become a leading name in global patent innovation. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Oppo ranked 9th worldwide in 2023 for the number of patent applications, with 1,766 published filings that year — reinforcing its commitment to research, technology, and continuous innovation.
Criticism
Germany (2022):
In 2022, Oppo faced legal trouble in Germany after Nokia filed a lawsuit accusing the company of using patented technologies without obtaining proper licenses. The dispute led a German court to suspend Oppo smartphone sales across the country, marking a major setback for the brand in the European market.
India (2022):
That same year, Oppo was fined ₹43.8 billion (approximately $550 million) by the Indian government for alleged tax evasion. The penalty followed an extensive investigation by authorities into the company’s financial operations and import practices.
Thailand (2025):
In early 2025, reports surfaced that Oppo and Realme smartphones came with preinstalled illegal loan applications that users were unable to remove. The discovery sparked public outrage, prompting both companies to announce the discontinuation of such practices and commit to greater transparency and user control over preinstalled software.
