Salman Khan (born Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan on 27 December 1965) is a renowned Indian actor, film producer, and television personality who primarily works in Hindi cinema. With a career spanning more than three decades, he has earned several honors, including two National Film Awards as a producer and two Filmfare Awards for acting. Widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most commercially successful stars, Khan has consistently dominated the box office. Forbes has listed him among the world’s highest-paid celebrities multiple times, ranking him as the top Indian entertainer in 2018. He holds the record for starring in the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year on ten separate occasions — the most by any actor in India.
Khan made his acting debut with a supporting role in Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988) but gained nationwide recognition with his first lead role in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), directed by Sooraj Barjatya. The film was a massive success and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Throughout the 1990s, he established himself as a leading actor through box-office hits such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999), and Biwi No.1 (1999). After a few uneven years, he redefined his stardom with Wanted (2009), followed by blockbuster successes including Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Kick (2014), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Sultan (2016), and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). Although his later films received mixed responses, Tiger 3 (2023) reaffirmed his strong box-office presence.
Outside of films, Khan is a popular television host, best known for presenting the reality show Bigg Boss since 2010. He is also actively involved in philanthropy through his charitable organization, the Being Human Foundation, which focuses on healthcare and education for underprivileged communities.
Despite his success, Khan’s career has been shadowed by controversies and legal challenges. He was convicted in 2015 for culpable homicide in a hit-and-run case, though the verdict was later overturned on appeal. In 2018, he received a five-year sentence for a blackbuck poaching case and remains on bail while his appeal is under consideration.
Today, Salman Khan stands as one of Bollywood’s most influential and enduring figures—an actor whose on-screen charisma, mass appeal, and philanthropy continue to define his legacy in Indian entertainment.
